Balmorhea, All Is Wild, All Is Silent

By the second track, you feel as if you have been everywhere they could possibly take you. Hauntingly soft melodies, to loud peaking growths that seem to transport you make this record what it is said to be: "All Is Wild, All Is Silent." The album is a little bit of everything, and then some. By the time you make it to Remembrance, the seemingly timid duo turns into a writhing army of musicians, screaming and wailing. Tracks like "Remembrance" and "Coahuila" leave you wanting more, which doesn't really ever seem to come except for in minimal doses. Perhaps they intend on keeping us on our feet. For now however, it feels like it should be here now, like having a warm shower suddenly turn cold on you. Still this release is very much a delicately beautiful display of what we can expect from them in the future. This is their 3rd studio release and it looks like the band is only getting better at proving themselves as instrumentalists. Take a listen to "Remembrance" here. If you are not going to be in Salt Lake this summer, you may want to second guess that decision and by now I am sure you've guessed why. The best thing about these shows is that they are free. That's right! Despite their high-profile line-ups, The Twilight Concert Series has managed to consistantly pull some huge strings, giving us something to be proud of.  Previous acts include: Dr. Dog, Peter Bjorn and John, Michael Franti, The Roots, Andrew Bird, Nada Surf, Broken Social Scene, Neko Case, Galactic, YoLa Tengo and so many more. Desert Noises

Honestly, we can't think of anything cooler than this coming out of Provo right now. What is it with that valley? It seems to be a mecca for up and coming artists.  Desert Noises has been playing around for quite a while, but they are nothing less than serious musicians. They may be young, but they mean business. If you haven't seen this video check it out now. Also be sure to check out more videos like this from Provo Acoustic Sessions on Youtube. Listen to a track entitled "New Man" off of their recently released self-titled EP here. The EP was apparently recorded in only 4 days. Pretty impressive seeing as it is their debut. You can buy their EP at Amazon, on itunes, and at the Northplatte Store. Rumor has it, that they will be back in the studio this summer, to record a full length album again with Northplatte Records. 

J. Tillman

Your life would be better of with J. Tillman in it. Recently we rediscovered him while reading Fricke's Picks in the Rolling Stone, where he is quoted to be: "a compelling whirl of Laurel Canyon-echo balladry and desolate-psychedelia stomp." We consider Tillman to be among the great songwriters of our day.  You may know him better for his drumming in Fleet Foxes more than for his solo work, but that will soon change. Tillman is getting more and more recognition as a solo artist and we feel he is well on his way to becoming a much bigger name. We only hope he finds time to break away from the successes of the Foxes, to come our way soon.  His new album, "Year In The Kingdom" is scheduled to come out in September through Western Vinyl and Bella Union. Amazingly enough you can take a sneak-peek listen at an unmastered  track entitled "Earthly Bodies" here.
